One Man's Trash

My good friend Ari Derfel never ceases to amaze me. He's full of ideas and charisma and is totally unique...after collecting his personal trash for one whole year, every single piece of it has been recycled into an incredible piece of art:

Headed for Teotihuacan, Mexico

'The Journey Within' June 4th - June 8th at the Pyramids of Teotihuacan, 1 hour north or Mexico City.

Once again, I am taking a group to the magical and beautiful land of the Toltecs. Every Journey there is completely unique, and every time I set foot on that sacred ground the rocks, steps, grass, sky, clouds, sun, and people reflect a love so huge, every moment becomes an invitation into a completely harmonious equilibrium with 'Truth'. It is the shedding of one dream, and the rebirth of a new point of view aligned with our own personal pure integrity. --> The snake that sheds the skin and grows the wings to fly to the sun = the human that can let go of the fear and self-judgment and live in complete integrity and love for all life

Art and Life

'Ascension' (work in progress)

As with any discipline or job that we have, we can always find the similarities with life in general. For many years, i have watched the parallels between art and life. Working on this new piece I can see that there are so many possibilities and variables that can change the direction in which the piece goes...and invariably, that experience used to bring me to a state of procrastination and inaction. But experience has shown time and time again that ACTION is what makes the difference. Take the action and see how it turns out. Imagining the outcome can help us narrow our choices down, but it can never truly predict what the result will be like. When life is changing all around us, we can feel our 'call' to rise to the occasion and make choices that propel us in the direction of our hearts desire with tenacity and confidence. The same thing for sitting in front of an unfinished work of art. Rise to the occasion, take some risky chances that allow the 'bold' and 'unique' characteristics that reside within ourselves to really shine and inspire a whole new direction we may not have seen before.

The Lonely Taco

Growing up I was in such awe of my father. He was my childhood hero. He knew the answer to everything and from a child’s eyes always had an answer for everything. It’s funny the things we notice in our parents behaviors that somehow (not surprisingly) end up in our own behavior albeit slightly tweaked in our own personal way. My father was always quiet around new people. Some would say standoffish, but I could tell that he was just scoping out the scene getting to know everyone there until finding the appropriate way to engage in the varying conversations. He studied everyone and acted accordingly. I have those same observing qualities that have been a great asset in so many ways. However, the other day, a friend, teacher, and mentor made a comment to me as I politely waited to see if anyone was going to eat the last taco on the plate. The politeness was obvious, and his response was, “Aaron, aren’t you hungry? If you want the taco, kill it. Don’t hesitate!” I did and the taco was amazing. I sat smiling as the memories that flooded through my mind on how sitting and observing a situation is a form of hesitation. There is a non-committal attitude in hesitation. Where’s the passion?

How many times is there a moment where a spontaneous choice is needed? If that choice is made right there and then, the passion and excitement of doing so becomes the fuel to ensure it is followed through. The moment hesitation enters the equation, the momentum and raw power of the excitement is hanging in the wings. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of times where deliberation is necessary and can be what is needed to make a ‘good’ decision. But as far as feeling ‘alive’ and expressive, nothing depletes the wave of inspiration like being unsure of something.

Being alive right here and right now in whatever situation is happening around us is another opportunity to express our gratitude for the opportunity to express our art in our way and do it with complete integrity.

Elemental Experience

Just returning from the Elemental Experience in Mission Bay, San Diego. From all the pieces I had on display, these two definitely got the most attention. Be it size or color, it was fascinating to watch people rubber neck as they walked by and turn back and really look at the work thoroughly. It is always a great experience to connect with people through art...be it their smiles, their reactions to what they see, or the passionate conversations that go in all sorts of directions. Everyone that came to look at the art had something completely unique to say about them. One thing that stood out was a somewhat frequent comment on how the green and yellow piece (above) looked like slices taken from a cross section of the trunk of a tree. I loved that! Thanks to everyone who stopped by.

Doodle excercises

As an exercise, I love to take a blank canvas and doodle all over it. It is a great way to release whatever is going on in life and connect to that raw emotion and not worry about the words or having to explain anything. It's fast. It's slow. It's random and it's liberating. It's also a great exercise in silencing any thinking and replacing it with an innocent sense of adventure. This was an exercise I used to do all the time as a meditative assignment. It served a great purpose at quieting whatever voices existed in my head that wanted to criticize or question the creative process. There's nothing like it...and I highly recommend it! The other thing I would and still do is patterns. They are a grand meditation and every repetition is another chance to go deep into daydreaming.

sketches

It's been a long while since I have done any figure drawing. I am entertaining the idea of fusing some of these quick sketches into some other work...we'll see what happens
